Catedral · Cathedral · foto/photo: Maria Adelaide Silva

Potosi, in Bolivia, was founded in 1546 as a mining town and today this is still its main economic activity. From the mines of Cerro Rico, the mountain that dominates the view of the city, came most of the silver obtained by Spain during the colonial period.

Potosi thus lived a period of great wealth, reflected in several colonial buildings that can still be seen in the city, which in 1987 earned it the title of World Heritage Site by UNESCO. In this city of narrow streets, unfortunately the conservation of its heritage is in general not very good. An exception is the Mint House, now a historical museum.

A visit to Potosí is not complete without knowing one of the mines of Cerro Rico. The working conditions of miners is however very bad, causing serious health problems.

Potosí is also one of the highest cities in the world, at 4,090m (13,420 ft) above the sea level.

Trujillo, 500km north of Lima, is considered the cradle of the independence of Peru. It is a pleasant town with a picturesque colonial architecture. Its main square, Plaza Mayor, is surrounded by beautiful 17th century buildings, including the cathedral and the city hall. The city was destroyed by an earthquake in 1619 and so all we see is from after it.

Zagreb is a big city and with an imposing architecture, but it lacks the charm of other cities I visited in the country. Nevertheless, some of its sights make it worth a visit. At right the statue of King Tomislav, considered the unifying of Croatia in the tenth century, in the squared named after him (Tomislav trg). From there I started to stroll through the city, until I reached the old city.

Zagreb Cathedral is another landmark of the city. I read that always some part of its façade is covered, in an eternal restoration. The original cathedral was almost entirely destroyed in an earthquake in 1880 and the current one replaced it, built in neo-Gothic style. Its towers reach 108m high, making it the tallest building in Croatia.

I arrived in Poreč under a heavy rain and I admired the 4th-century Euphrasian Basilica, considered one of the most beautiful and best preserved examples of Byzantine art. The annex museum, mostly at open air, remained closed and and only after insisting a lot I could see a little part of it. Afterwards the weather cleared and I could visit the rest of the city. The Basilica was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Split is a city in Croatia with a very pitouresque characteristic: its historical center developed over the structures of an ancient palace of Roman emperor Diocletian, built in the 4th century. The present buldings, most of them from the Middle Ages and Renaissance, used original elements of the palace, such as columns and niches. The cathedral was built over Diocletian’s mausoleum, in an octogonal shape.

Korčula is one of the hundreds of islands in Croatia and also the name of its main city, which was all I visited. During the Middle Ages, Korčula was part of the Venetian Republic, what is reminded today on its main gate by the winged lion, symbol of La Serenissima. The architecture seen today is basically from this period: stone buildings on narrow streets, as well as some parts of the old that surrounded the city. A travel in time.

St. Mark’s Cathedral, on the highest point of the city, is its main monument. It was built in the 15th century by local artists in Gothic-Renaissance style.

Dubrovnik is one of the most important tourist destinations in Croatia. Situated in the south of the country, it was an important maritime trade center in the Middle Ages.

Dubrovnik - muralhas - walls

Almost 2km of walls surround Stari Grad (Old Town), which is in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The walls were built between the 12th and 17th centuries and it is possible to walk all over it, seeing the city from above and with great views of the coast. There are several watchtowers and four gates, with Pile being the most famous, as it is generally through which most of the tourists go in and out of the city.

Dubrovnik - Portão Pile - Pile Gate

Dubrovnik - muralhas - walls

Dubrovnik - telhados - roofs

The streets are made of polished stone and I believe it must be slippery under rain. Its mains street, Stradun or Placa, crosses the city and is full of stores and cafés.
An earthquake destroyed a good part of the city and so most of what we see was built or restored afterwards. The Independence War, in 1991 and 1992, was another devastating moment for the city, when over half of its buildings were destroyed by the Yugoslavian Army bombardments. Foreign help was necessary to recover the buildings and restore the pride to their dwellers.

Dubrovnik has many Catholic churches, most of them in Barroque style. The church of the Franciscan Monastery has a door decorated with a bautiful 15th century pietà and the cloisters are very beautiful. It also has a pharmacy that has been in operation since 1317! Saint Blaise Church is perhaps the most important, because of the annual festivity for the city’s patron saint. Dubrovnik’s sinagogue is the second oldest in Europe.
