Huaca Rajada (rajada = split) is one of the most important archaeological sites in northern Peru, not by its size – there are only three buildings – but because here tombs of rulers of the Moche culture were found almost intact. The Moche lived in this region between 100 b.C. and 800 A.D.

The smallest of the three buildings – and perhaps the reason it escaped looting – is a pyramid that was successively expanded at each generation of local rulers. In one of the inner layers, in 1987 the tomb of a ruler was found intact. He received the name of the Lord of Sipán. He was buried surrounded by close people and treasures. Today at the site are in exhibition replicas of what was found (these photos).

Other tombs found are those of the Priest and the Old Lord of Sipan, the latter being the oldest of the ones that have already been found and with a less sumptuous content.

In 2002, the Royal Tombs of Sipán Museum was opened in the city of Lambayeque, to display the treasures found in Huaca Rajada. Its pyramidal shape with ramps was designed to simulate the old temples.
