Zadar is a portuary city, whose commercial importance dates back to antiquity, when the local people traded with the Phoenicians, the Etruscans and the Greeks.
The Cathedral of St. Anastasia is the largest in Dalmatia and was built in Romanesque style during the 12th and 13th centuries on the site of a 4th century church. The bell tower, from where you can have a panoramic view of the city, is next to it.
Above, the Romanesque churches of St. Chrysogonus, Zadar’s patron saint, and St. Mary. On the left, the Monastery of St. Francis of Assisi, originally from the 13th century.
The People’s Square (Narodni trg) has two of the most beautiful buildings in the city. Too bad it is taken by the umbrellas of the cafes – a visual pollution actually very common in Croatia.

Dubrovnik is one of the most important tourist destinations in Croatia. Situated in the south of the country, it was an important maritime trade center in the Middle Ages.
Almost 2km of walls surround Stari Grad (Old Town), which is in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The walls were built between the 12th and 17th centuries and it is possible to walk all over it, seeing the city from above and with great views of the coast. There are several watchtowers and four gates, with Pile being the most famous, as it is generally through which most of the tourists go in and out of the city.
Dubrovnik has beautiful Renaissance palaces among its many stone buildings. The streets are made of polished stone and I believe it must be slippery under rain. Its mains street, Stradun or Placa, crosses the city and is full of stores and cafés.
An earthquake destroyed a good part of the city and so most of what we see was built or restored afterwards. The Independence War, in 1991 and 1992, was another devastating moment for the city, when over half of its buildings were destroyed by the Yugoslavian Army bombardments. Foreign help was necessary to recover the buildings and restore the pride to their dwellers.
Dubrovnik has many Catholic churches, most of them in Barroque style. The church of the Franciscan Monastery has a door decorated with a bautiful 15th century pietà and the cloisters are very beautiful. It also has a pharmacy that has been in operation since 1317! Saint Blaise Church is perhaps the most important, because of the annual festivity for the city’s patron saint. Dubrovnik’s sinagogue is the second oldest in Europe.
