| San Marino is the oldest republic in the world and one of the smallest, with its 61 sq.km and a population of roughly 25000. |

This Italian-speaking country was founded, according to tradition, in 301 AD by Marinus, on Mount Titano, at 750m above the sea level. Marinus, leader of a group of Christians who tried to escape from religious persecution, is depicted in a small statue on a corner of the Government Palace. He is believed to be buried inside the Basilica. |
| The Government Palace dates back from the 15th century, but was largely changed in the 19th century. San Marino has a famous Philatelic Museum - unfortunately under renovation when I was there - and the country claims to have had the first official postal service in the world. |

"Le Rocche" - fortified medieval walls - surround the main city and formed its defense. I visited only one of the three towers: "Guaita", which dates back to the 11th century. |
| Borgo Maggiore might well be an Italian city. This is the end of the line for buses from Rimini, on the Adriatic coast, only 24km away. From there we take a funicular to the capital, also named San Marino. The country has nine cities. |
