A catedral de Monreale, na Sicília, foi construída o século XII em estilo normando, porém em seu interior prevalecem os estilos bizantino e árabe, outras fortes influências artísticas na ilha. Junto com outras igrejas e palácios construídos na Sicília nesse período, a Catedral de Monreale recebeu o título de Patrimônio da Humanidade pela UNESCO.

The Cathedral of Monreale, in Sicily, was built in the 12th century in Norman style, but inside the Byzantine and Arab styles prevail, both strong artistic influences in the island. Along with other churches and palaces built during this period in Sicily, the Monreale Cathedral was nominated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Os magníficos mosaicos do altar, com um detalhe do Cristo Pantocrator, ou Todo Poderoso, típica representação bizantina que mostra Cristo em posição de benção. A área coberta pelos mosaicos só é menor que a da Hagia Sophia, em Istambul, porém está em melhor estado de conservação.

The magnificent mosaics of the altar, with a detail of the Christ Pantocrator, or Almighty, a typical Byzantine representation showing Christ in a blessing position. The area covered by mosaics is only smaller than Hagia Sophia’s in Istanbul, but is in better condition.

Potosí, na Bolívia, foi fundada em 1546 com uma cidade mineradora e até hoje esta é sua principal atividade econômica. Das minas de Cerro Rico, a montanha que domina a vista da cidade, saiu a maior parte da prata obtida pelos espanhóis no período colonial.

Potosí viveu assim um período de muita riqueza, refletido em diversas construções coloniais que ainda podem ser vistas na cidade, o que lhe garantiu em 1987 o título de Patrimônio da Humanidade, pela UNESCO. Nessa cidade de ruas estreitas, infelizmente a conservação de seu patrimônio em geral não é muito boa. Uma exceção é a Casa da Moeda, hoje um museu histórico.

Uma visita a Potosí não está completa sem conhecer uma das minas de Cerro Rico. As condições de trabalho dos mineiros é no entanto muito ruim, causando graves problemas de saúde.

Potosí é também uma das cidades mais altas do mundo, localizada a 4090m acima do nível do mar.

Potosi, in Bolivia, was founded in 1546 as a mining town and today this is still its main economic activity. From the mines of Cerro Rico, the mountain that dominates the view of the city, came most of the silver obtained by Spain during the colonial period.

Potosi thus lived a period of great wealth, reflected in several colonial buildings that can still be seen in the city, which in 1987 earned it the title of World Heritage Site by UNESCO. In this city of narrow streets, unfortunately the conservation of its heritage is in general not very good. An exception is the Mint House, now a historical museum.

A visit to Potosí is not complete without knowing one of the mines of Cerro Rico. The working conditions of miners is however very bad, causing serious health problems.

Potosí is also one of the highest cities in the world, at 4,090m (13,420 ft) above the sea level.

Sucre

Até o final do século XIX, Sucre era a capital da Bolívia. Hoje ela divide essa função com La Paz, onde ficam os poderes Executivo e Legislativo, enquanto o Judiciário permaneceu em Sucre. A cor branca prevalece em seus edifícios e igrejas, alguns do século XVI. Sucre é uma cidade pequena e encantadora, que pela arquitetura do centro histórico recebeu em 1981 o título de Patrimônio da Humanidade, pela UNESCO. Veja mais fotos no meu álbum Sucre no Flickr.

Until the end of the 19th century, Sucre was the capital of Bolivia. Today it shares this function with La Paz, where the Executive and Legislative powers are, while the Judiciary remained in Sucre. The white color prevails in its buildings and churches, some from the 16th century. Chan Chan é a maior cidade pré-colombiana, construída no auge da civilização Chimú, há cerca de 700 anos. Seus palácios e templos foram construídos em barro e decorados com desenhos geométricos e temas da natureza – oceano, aves e peixes eram elementos comuns.
Chan Chan is the largest pre-Columbian city, built at the height of the Chimú civilization, about 700 years ago. Its palaces and temples were built of adobe and decorated with geometric patterns and themes from nature – ocean, birds and fish were common elements.

O complexo contém dez cidadelas, cercadas por muralhas, cada uma utilizada por um dos dez reis desse período. Das construções abertas ao público, a mais visitada é o Palácio Tschudi, com suas salas de audiência decoradas com losangos, seus amplos pátios e até uma cisterna.
The complex contains ten citadels, surrounded by walls, each one used by one of the ten rulers of this period. Of the buildings open to the public, the most visited of them is Tschudi Palace, with its court rooms decorated with diamond shapes, its large patios and even a cistern.

Chan Chan ficou parcialmente soterrada por séculos, após seu abandono com a chegada do Incas. Chuvas e alagamentos em períodos do El Niño danificaram o sítio. Muita coisa foi restaurada, mas pouco foi reconstruído, de acordo com as regras da UNESCO, que declarou Chan Chan Patrimônio da Humanidade.
Chan Chan was partially buried for centuries after its abandonment with the arrival of the Incas. Rains and flood during periods of El Niño damaged the site. Much has been restored, but little has been rebuilt, according to the rules of UNESCO, which declared Chan Chan a World Heritage Site.

A foto ao lado mostra como era uma tumba real. Acredita-se que quando o rei morria, as pessoas mais próximas a ele eram sacrificadas e enterradas com ele, para acompanhá-lo na vida após a morte. Os saqueadores entretanto deixaram muito pouco que possa provar esta teoria.

The photo at left shows what a royal tomb looked like. It is believed that, when the king died, the people closest to him were sacrificed and buried with him, to accompany him in the afterlife. Looters however left very little to help prove this theory.

A península de Ístria fica no noroeste da Croácia, junto à Itália e à Eslovênia, banhada pelo Mar Adriático. Passei dois dias percorrendo essa região de charmosas cidades. Comecei em Rovinj, um de seus destinos mais populares.
The Istrian peninsula is located in Northwestern Croatia, next to Italy and Slovenia, bathe dby the Adriatic Sea. I spent two days traveling through this region of charming cities. I started at Rovinj, one of its most popular destinations.

A Basílica de Santa Eufêmia fica no alto da cidade e a torre do sino se destaca na vista. Ela foi construída no século XVIII em estilo barroco e guarda o sarcófago desta santa.

St. Euphemia’s Basilica is on the top of the city and its bell tower stands our from the view. It was built in the 18th century in Baroque style and keeps the sarcophagus of this saint.

Cheguei a Poreč debaixo de muita chuva e fiquei admirando a Basílica Eufrasiana, do século VI e considerada um dos mais belos e bem preservados exemplos de arte bizantina. O museu anexo, boa parte a céu aberto, ficou fechado e só com muita insistência pude entrar num pedacinho dele. Depois o tempo abriu e pude visitar o resto da cidade. A Basílica foi declarada Patrimônio da Humanidade da UNESCO.
I arrived in Poreč under a heavy rain and I admired the 4th-century Euphrasian Basilica, considered one of the most beautiful and best preserved examples of Byzantine art. The annex museum, mostly at open air, remained closed and and only after insisting a lot I could see a little part of it. Afterwards the weather cleared and I could visit the rest of the city. The Basilica was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Pula é a maior cidade da Ístria. A arena de Pula, construída no século I, é o sexto maior anfiteatro que chegou aos dias de hoje. Em bom estado de preservação, embora tenha sido dilapidado ao longo dos séculos, ele é usado em eventos culturais.
Pula Arena, built in the 1st century, is the sixth largest amphitheater that reached today. It is in a good state of preservation, although it has been dilapidated over the centuries, and it is used for cultural events.

O interior da Ístria é cheio de pequenas vilas medievais no alto de morros. Uma das mais famosas é Motovun, que só vi da estrada. Uma curiosidade: o piloto de corridas Mario Andretti nasceu aqui.
The interior of Istria is full of small medieval villages on the top of the hills. One of the most famous is Motovun, which only saw the road. A curiosity: race driver Mario Andretti was born here.

Outra dessas vilas é Grožnjan, um encanto de lugar onde paramos e pude tirar muitas fotos. Grožnjan é cheia de ateliês e também organiza festivais de música;
Another of these villages is Grožnjan, a charming place where we stopped and I could take lots of pictures. Grožnjan is full of ateliers and also organizes music festivals.

O Parque Nacional Lagos de Plitvice foi fundado em 1949 e é o mais antigo e o maior da Croácia. Trilhas acompanham uma seqüência de 16 lagos verdes separados por barragens naturais de travertino e ligados por cachoeiras. Parte do parque estava fechado para manutenção da estrada, mas o que eu vi foi absolutamente lindo.

Plitvice Lakes National Park was founded in 1949 and is the oldest and largest in Croatia. Trails follow a sequence of 16 green lakes separated by natural dams of travertine and linked by waterfalls. Part of the park was closed for road conservation, but what I saw was absolutely breathtaking.

Após uma navegação pelo Lago Kozjak – o maior do parque, com uma superfície de 82ha – chega-se aos Lagos Inferiores, onde se sucedem lagos muito azuis e suaves cascatas. Um banquete para qualquer amante da fotografia.

After a navigation on Kozjak Lake – the largest in the park, with an area of 82ha – we arrive at the Lower Lakes, a sequence of very blue lakes and gentle cascades. A feast for any photography lover.

A grande atração de Šibenik, uma pequena cidade costeira onde ruelas sobem pela colina, é sua belíssima catedral. A Catedral de São Tiago, do século XV, é considerada o mais importante monumento renascentista em todo o país.

The main attraction in Šibenik, a small coastal town where small streets go up the hill, is its beautiful cathedral. The Cathedral of St. James, from the 15th century, is considered the most important Renaissance monument in the country.

Por suas características arquitetônicas únicas, que mostram a transição entre os estilos gótico e renascentista, a catedral foi declarada Patrimônio da Humanidade pela UNESCO.

Trogir é uma pequena cidade na costa da Croácia e seu centro histórico – Patrimônio da Humanidade da UNESCO – fica numa ilha.

Trogir is a small city in the coast of Croatia and its historical center – a UNESCO World Heritage site – is on an island.

Trogir - Fortaleza do Camerlengo - Kamerlengo Fortress

A Fortaleza do Camerlengo é um dos principais cartões postais da cidade. Construída nos séculos XIV e XV, durante a época em que Trogir fazia parte da República de Veneza, hoje é usada para eventos.

The Camerlengo Fortress is one of the city’s landmarks. Built in the 14th and 15th centuries, by the time when Trogir was part of the Venetian Republic, it is used today for events.

A Catedral de São Lourenço foi construída entre os séculos XII e XVII. Externamente, predomina o estilo Romanesco, mas internamente a arquitetura é em estilo gótico. A entrada principal da igreja é decorada com relevos e estátuas, como essas de Adão e Eva mostradas acima. Este portal do século XIII, do artista dálmata Mestre Radovan, é considerado a principal escultura gótica dos Balcãs. A torre da igreja foi construída ao longo de quatro séculos em estilos distintos.

The Cathedral of St. Lawrence was built between the 12th and 17th centuries. Outside, the Romaneque style prevails, whereas inside the arquitecture follows the Gothic style. The main entrance is decorated with reliefs and statues, such as these of Adam and Eve shown above. This 13th century portal, by Dalmatian artist Master Radovan, is considered the most important Gothic sculpture in the Balkans. The bell tower was built along four centuries in different styles.
