A catedral de Monreale, na Sicília, foi construída o século XII em estilo normando, porém em seu interior prevalecem os estilos bizantino e árabe, outras fortes influências artísticas na ilha. Junto com outras igrejas e palácios construídos na Sicília nesse período, a Catedral de Monreale recebeu o título de Patrimônio da Humanidade pela UNESCO.

The Cathedral of Monreale, in Sicily, was built in the 12th century in Norman style, but inside the Byzantine and Arab styles prevail, both strong artistic influences in the island. Along with other churches and palaces built during this period in Sicily, the Monreale Cathedral was nominated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Os magníficos mosaicos do altar, com um detalhe do Cristo Pantocrator, ou Todo Poderoso, típica representação bizantina que mostra Cristo em posição de benção. A área coberta pelos mosaicos só é menor que a da Hagia Sophia, em Istambul, porém está em melhor estado de conservação.

The magnificent mosaics of the altar, with a detail of the Christ Pantocrator, or Almighty, a typical Byzantine representation showing Christ in a blessing position. The area covered by mosaics is only smaller than Hagia Sophia’s in Istanbul, but is in better condition.

O Parque Nacional da Serra Geral é localizado na divisa entre os estados de Santa Catarina e Rio Grande do Sul. Um platô a 700m de altitude desce abruptamente para quase o nível do mar, formando paredões rochosos. A neblina é uma presença quase constante, especialmente nos meses mais frios.

Serra Geral National Park is located on the border between the states of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul. A plateau 700m above the sea level falls abruptly to nearly sea level, forming rocky cliffs. Fog is almost a constant presence, especially in the colder months.

As ruínas de Segesta guardam memórias de vários povos que passaram pela Sicília, como o anfiteatro grego, o castelo normando e a mesquita árabe. Seu monumento mais preservado, entretanto, é o templo em estilo dórico, cuja origem é atribuída aos elímios, um povo provavelmente oriundo da Ásia Menor.
The ruins of Segesta hold memories of several peoples who have passed through Sicily, such as the Greek amphitheater, the Norman castle and the Arab mosque. Its best preserved monument, however, is the Doric-style temple, whose origin is attributed to the Elymians, a people probably from Asia Minor.

Erice é uma encantadora cidade do noroeste da Sicília, a 750m acima do nível do mar. Embora bem antiga, o que se vê hoje é basicamente da Idade Média. Sua imponente catedral gótica (Duomo dell’Assunta), por exemplo, é do século XIV.
Erice is a charming city of northwest Sicily, 750m above the sea level. Although very old, what we see today is basically from the Middle Ages. Its imposing gothic cathedral (Duomo dell’Assunta), for example, is from the 14th century.

Trujillo, há 500km ao norte de Lima, é considerada o berço da independência do Peru. É uma agradável cidade com uma pitoresca arquitetura colonial. Sua principal praça, a Plaza Mayor, é cercada de belas construções do século XVII, incluindo a catedral e a prefeitura. A cidade foi arrasada por um terremoto em 1619 e portanto tudo o que se vê é posterior a esta data.
Trujillo, 500km north of Lima, is considered the cradle of the independence of Peru. It is a pleasant town with a picturesque colonial architecture. Its main square, Plaza Mayor, is surrounded by beautiful 17th century buildings, including the cathedral and the city hall. The city was destroyed by an earthquake in 1619 and so all we see is from after it.

The building of Trujillo’s Municipalidad, or city hall, was built in the early 20th century. At an earthquake in 1970, the third floor collapsed and was not rebuilt.

The Casa Ganoza Chopitea, also called Casa de los Leones (House of the Lions), was the one I liked most. It has moorish, baroque and rococo details. There is a friendly bistro there, where I had a delicious dinner.

A Coleção Casinelli é uma galeria privada que exibe peças cerâmicas de diversas culturas peruanas. Existe a intenção de criar um museu para melhor exibir deste valioso material. Há muita controvérsia sobre esta coleção, já que seu dono José Casinelli comprou essas peças dos “huaqueros” – os saqueadores de sítios arqueológicos. Em sua defesa, existe o argumento que este tesouro nacional teria sido levado para fora do país se ele não as tivesse comprado.

The Casinelli Collection is a private gallery that displays ceramic pieces of various Peruvian cultures. There are plans to create a museum for better displaying this valuable material. There is much controversy about this collection, as its owner José Casinelli bought these pieces from the “huaqueros” – the looters of archaeological sites. In his defense, there is the argument that this national treasure would have been taken out of the country if he had not purchased them.

A Ponte dos Dragões é decorada com estátuas desse ser mítico que é o símbolo da cidade. Ela foi construída para comemorar 40 anos de governo do Imperador Franz Josef I, quando a Eslovênia fazia parte do Império Austro-Húngaro, daí a inscrição “1848-1888″. Sua construção foi terminada em 1901, em estilo Secessionista, similar ao Art Nouveau.

Dragon Bridge is decorated with statues of this mythical being that is the symbol of the city. It was built to celebrate 40 years of government of Emperor Franz Josef I, when Slovenia was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, hence the inscription “1848-1888″. Its construction was completed in 1901, in Secessionist style, similar to Art Nouveau.

Bled é uma cidade junto a um lago de mesmo nome. Nas fotos de turismo, vemos um lindo lago com montanhas nevadas ao fundo (os Alpes Julianos). No dia em que fui lá, entretanto, a paisagem estava assim, cinza. Mas até que tinha seu charme, com aquelas nuvens baixas dando um ar misterioso ao lugar.

Bled is a town next to a lake of the same name. In the tourism pictures, we see a beautiful lake with snowy mountains in the background (the Julian Alps). The day I was there, however, the landscape was like this, gray. But even this had its charm, with those low clouds giving an eerie atmosphere to this place.

Quando visitei o castelo, chovia. Depois o tempo abriu durante o passeio no lago. Dois cenários bem diferentes. Naquele dia estava havendo uma feira medieval no castelo, com artesanato, música e comida.
When I visited the castle, it rained. Afterwards the sky cleared during the ride in the lake. Two very distinct sceneries. There was a medieval fair in the castle that day, with crafts, music and food.

To make a visit to Bled complete, Vintgar Gorge is a delightful walk along the river Radovna, following its countless rapids. The cloudy day was perfect for photos.

A Caverna Postojna é uma das grandes atrações turísticas da Eslovênia. Esta enorme caverna de mais de 20km de extensão, dos quais cerca de 5km são acessíveis aos turistas, foi aberta à visitação pública em 1819. Uma curta viagem de trem leva os turistas ao início de uma pequena trilha guiada percorrendo diversos salões com as mais variadas formações.

Postojna Cave is one of the major tourist attractions of Slovenia. This huge cave is more than 20km long, of which approximately 5 km are accessible to tourists, and was opened to the public in 1819. A short train ride takes tourists to the beginning of a short guided trail cossing several rooms with the most varied formations.

Próximo à caverna, pode-se visitar um viveiro com muitos animais encontrados nessa caverna, entre os quais se destaca o proteus (Proteus anguinus), anfíbio cego conhecido também como “salamandra branca”.
Near the cave, it is possible to visit a vivarium with many animals found in this cave, among which is proteus (Proteus anguinus), a blind amphibian also known as “white salamander.”

Zagreb é uma cidade grande e de arquitetura imponente, mas não tem o charme de outras cidades que visitei no país. Mesmo assim, alguns de seus atrativos valem uma visita. Ao lado, a estátua do Rei Tomislav, considerado o unificador da Croácia no século X, na praça que leva seu nome (Tomislav trg). Dali fui passeando pela cidade, até chegar na cidade velha.

Zagreb is a big city and with an imposing architecture, but it lacks the charm of other cities I visited in the country. Nevertheless, some of its sights make it worth a visit. At right the statue of King Tomislav, considered the unifying of Croatia in the tenth century, in the squared named after him (Tomislav trg). From there I started to stroll through the city, until I reached the old city.

A Igreja de São Marcos é para mim o que zagreb tem de mais bonito. Esta construção gótica do século XV tem no telhado os brasões de Zagreb (o castelo branco à direita) e do Reino da Croácia, Eslavônia e Dalmácia.
The Church of St. Mark is for me what Zagreb has of more beautiful. This 15th-century gothic building has on its tiled roof the coats of arms of Zagreb (the white castle at right) and of the Kingdom of Croatia, Slavonia and Dalmatia.

A catedral de Zagreb é outro cartão postal da cidade. Li que ela está sempre com algum tapume encobrindo parte de sua fachada, numa eterna restauração. A catedral original foi quase inteiramente destruída num terremoto em 1880 e a atual foi construída em seu lugar em estilo neo-gótico. Suas torres atingem 108m de altura e são assim a construção mais alta da Croácia.

Zagreb Cathedral is another landmark of the city. I read that always some part of its façade is covered, in an eternal restoration. The original cathedral was almost entirely destroyed in an earthquake in 1880 and the current one replaced it, built in neo-Gothic style. Its towers reach 108m high, making it the tallest building in Croatia.

The Istrian peninsula is located in Northwestern Croatia, next to Italy and Slovenia, bathe dby the Adriatic Sea. I spent two days traveling through this region of charming cities. I started at Rovinj, one of its most popular destinations.

A Basílica de Santa Eufêmia fica no alto da cidade e a torre do sino se destaca na vista. Ela foi construída no século XVIII em estilo barroco e guarda o sarcófago desta santa.

St. Euphemia’s Basilica is on the top of the city and its bell tower stands our from the view. It was built in the 18th century in Baroque style and keeps the sarcophagus of this saint.

Cheguei a Poreč debaixo de muita chuva e fiquei admirando a Basílica Eufrasiana, do século VI e considerada um dos mais belos e bem preservados exemplos de arte bizantina. O museu anexo, boa parte a céu aberto, ficou fechado e só com muita insistência pude entrar num pedacinho dele. Depois o tempo abriu e pude visitar o resto da cidade. A Basílica foi declarada Patrimônio da Humanidade da UNESCO.
I arrived in Poreč under a heavy rain and I admired the 4th-century Euphrasian Basilica, considered one of the most beautiful and best preserved examples of Byzantine art. The annex museum, mostly at open air, remained closed and and only after insisting a lot I could see a little part of it. Afterwards the weather cleared and I could visit the rest of the city. The Basilica was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Pula é a maior cidade da Ístria. A arena de Pula, construída no século I, é o sexto maior anfiteatro que chegou aos dias de hoje. Em bom estado de preservação, embora tenha sido dilapidado ao longo dos séculos, ele é usado em eventos culturais.
Pula Arena, built in the 1st century, is the sixth largest amphitheater that reached today. It is in a good state of preservation, although it has been dilapidated over the centuries, and it is used for cultural events.

O interior da Ístria é cheio de pequenas vilas medievais no alto de morros. Uma das mais famosas é Motovun, que só vi da estrada. Uma curiosidade: o piloto de corridas Mario Andretti nasceu aqui.
The interior of Istria is full of small medieval villages on the top of the hills. One of the most famous is Motovun, which only saw the road. A curiosity: race driver Mario Andretti was born here.

Outra dessas vilas é Grožnjan, um encanto de lugar onde paramos e pude tirar muitas fotos. Grožnjan é cheia de ateliês e também organiza festivais de música;

A Fortaleza do Camerlengo é um dos principais cartões postais da cidade. Construída nos séculos XIV e XV, durante a época em que Trogir fazia parte da República de Veneza, hoje é usada para eventos.

The Camerlengo Fortress is one of the city’s landmarks. Built in the 14th and 15th centuries, by the time when Trogir was part of the Venetian Republic, it is used today for events.

A Catedral de São Lourenço foi construída entre os séculos XII e XVII. Externamente, predomina o estilo Romanesco, mas internamente a arquitetura é em estilo gótico. A entrada principal da igreja é decorada com relevos e estátuas, como essas de Adão e Eva mostradas acima. Este portal do século XIII, do artista dálmata Mestre Radovan, é considerado a principal escultura gótica dos Balcãs. A torre da igreja foi construída ao longo de quatro séculos em estilos distintos.

The Cathedral of St. Lawrence was built between the 12th and 17th centuries. Outside, the Romaneque style prevails, whereas inside the arquitecture follows the Gothic style. The main entrance is decorated with reliefs and statues, such as these of Adam and Eve shown above. This 13th century portal, by Dalmatian artist Master Radovan, is considered the most important Gothic sculpture in the Balkans. The bell tower was built along four centuries in different styles.

Mostar - Ponte - Bridge

A Stari Most, ou Ponte Antiga, foi construída pelos Otomanos no século XVI sobre o Rio Neretva. Símbolo da cidade, ela foi totalmente destruída em 1993, durante a Guerra da Bósnia. Com ajuda internacional, a ponte foi reconstruída com os mesmos materiais e técnica original. Inaugurada em 2004, tornou-se novamente ponto de referência e orgulho da população que tanto sofreu na guerra.

Stari Most, or Old Bridge, was built by the Ottomans in the 16th century over Neretva River. A symbol of the city, it was completely destroyed in 1993, during the Bosnian War. With international aid, the bridge was reconstructed with the same materials and original technique. Inaugurated in 2004, it became again a reference point and pride of the people who suffered so much in the war.

Foi ao lado desta ponte, junto ao atual Museu de Sarajevo, que o príncipe da Austria Frank Ferdinand foi assassinado, evento que deu início à Primeira Guerra Mundial.
It was next to this bridge, by what now is the Museum of Sarajevo, that Prince Frank Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated, an event that led to the First World War.
