Pesquisadores franceses e italianos descobriram no Peru o crânio e a mandíbula de uma baleia gigante que viveu há mais de 13 milhões de anos. Esta nova espécie recebeu o nome de Leviathan melvillei, uma homenagem a Herman Melville, autor de Moby Dick. Embora menor que as maiores baleias que existem hoje, o Leviathan melvillei era um feroz predador, com grandes dentes afiados. French and Italian researchers found in Peru a skull and a jaw of a giant whale that lived over 13 million years ago. This new species was named Leviathan melvillei, a homage to Herman Melville, author of Moby Dick. Although smaller than the longest existing whale today, the Leviathan melvillei was a fierce predator, with big sharp teeth.
